History

Booker T. Washington High School (1948–1970)
Booker T. Washington High School served as a landmark educational institution in Montgomery, Alabama, operating from 1948 to 1970. The school was constructed on the historic site of Swayne College, a primary school that had closed in 1937. In 1948, the original Swayne building was demolished to make way for the new facility, which became Montgomery’s first high school dedicated to African American students. The school remained a vital community hub until it closed following the 1969–1970 academic year, at which point its students were transferred to Robert E. Lee High School and Jefferson Davis High School.
